Coral's Cookery School

Hale Community Centre November Newsletter

Spooky Pumpkin Cooking classes cooked up a storm. We were awarded funding from Hubbub to show people how to use their pumpkins as food and not just as Halloween decorations.

Coral from Coral's Cookery School lead 3 sessions for local families. Together they magicked up pumpkin soup and tasty cupcakes with Halloween sprinkles.  There was also fun spooky crafts for the children to make including mini pumpkins, spiders and a spooktacular lantern.

All the families also received a cookbook with lots of other pumpkin recipes ready for the 31st.

Many thanks to the families who attended the course; Cllr Catherine Powell who organised the course, the Hale Nursery & Primary Academy and Hale Community Fridge & Cupboard who supplied some of the ingredients we've cooked with over the last 5-weeks.

Tuesday 31st May 22

Last week was the first session of our new cooking course for local primary school children in Farnham.

Coral hosts these regular sessions at space2grow; this one, however, is going to be a little different... its the first 'Growing & Cooking Club' combining the cooking sessions with the veg patches.  Children will experience learning about the vegetables they use in their cooking.

space2grow's 'octogenarian veg expert' was on hand last week, to introduce the children to the veg patches; explain how vegetables grow and the care they need.

The children had a great time enjoying the garden before learning how to cook a family meal that they got to take home with them!

"Coral offers an exceptional service to all young people. Always happy, interactive and keeps the children engaged. My daughter really enjoyed her time. Coral was very patient with everyone. My daughter can't wait to come back."

Today was a little special... the children in the cookery club at space2grow were presented with specially commissioned chopping boards - these rectangles of wood connected over 5 different local charities and organisations!

The boards, made from upcycled wood on the acre were created by the Farnham Men in Sheds team, the group run as a collaborative project with Farnham Maltings.  The team enjoyed hearing from the children about what they had been cooking, whilst the children were excited to have a bespoke piece of equipment enabling them to continue cooking at home!

The cooking club hosted on the acre sees children cook alongside their parents creating nutritious meals using produce from the veg beds when possible. A huge thank you to the Farnham Lions who funded the current course.

Lovely last day of term for Cookery School at Space2Grow

27th May 2021

If you would like to support Coral's Cookery School sessions at space2grow in Farnham, you can do so by donating here.  space2grow have have been hosting cooking classes at the project since 2019, including offering courses to groups of local parents cooking meals alongside their children, and to adults going through recovery, working with Transform Housing & Support. The Courses run for 5 weeks allowing the participants to build rapport with each other.

“the course got me out more in the last five weeks than in previous months. It gave me something to focus on other than what was going on in my head. Coral is an amazing teacher and I learned some simple recipes I can make for myself having only eaten ready meals before.
Read Coral's reflections on running the course in a recent blog post.
